Surrender
Circumstances can change, and deciding to surrender a dog can be a difficult choice. We aim to provide honest guidance and ensure that any dog entering our care has the best possible chance at a safe and appropriate outcome.
Dogs adopted from PawSafe
Dogs adopted through PawSafe receive first priority. Our adoption agreement asks families to contact us if they are no longer able to care for their dog, and we remain committed to helping PawSafe alumni whenever we can.
For dogs NOT adopted from PawSafe
If your dog was not adopted through PawSafe, first contact the rescue or organization you originally adopted from. They may have the most complete information about your dog’s history and may have return or rehoming policies in place.
Evaluation Process
Every dog, including PawSafe alumni, is reviewed using the same safety, health, and behavioral criteria so we can responsibly determine whether we can meet the dog’s needs.
Timeline and Shelter Space
The surrender process typically takes a minimum of two weeks. This allows time for us to review your request, learn more about your dog, and wait for a safe, appropriate kennel opening, as shelter space is limited and depends on availability.
Health Requirements
To protect the health of all dogs in our care, surrendered dogs must meet the following requirements:

Have a negative Heartworm and Tick-borne disease (4DX) test if older than 6 months of age.

Are current on core vaccinations, including Rabies and Distemper.

Have complete medical records available, including vaccination history.
Behavioral Assessments
Every surrender request is reviewed by our Surrender Team, and in some situations we may request an assessment from a certified trainer to better understand the dog’s needs and make safe, responsible placement decisions.
